Georg Philipp Telemann and Georg Frederick Handel, two giants of Baroque music, were German teenagers when they met. Life separated them thereafter, Handel eventually moving to England and becoming the key figure in London’s musical life in the first half of the 18th century. Telemann stayed put and, after famously turning down the post at St Thomas Church in Leipzig leaving it to be filled by Johann Sebastian Bach, remained in Hamburg. Handel and Telemann remained friends and kept in touch throughout their life. Part of the Trinity Recitals in May 2025, this programme contrasts some of their greatest music. Suites from Telemann’s Don Quixote and Orpheus frame some of Handel’s most beautiful and powerful arias from his operas Alicina and Rodelinda sung by the wonderful soprano, Samantha Clarke.

Haydn’s The Creation
Thursday 14 November 2024, 7.30pm
St Martin in the Fields, London
Book now: https://www.stmartin-in-the-fields.org/calendar/la-nuova-musica-haydns-the-creation/
Haydn - The Creation
Sung in English
Featuring:
Elinor Rolfe Johnson, Soprano
Andrew Staples, Tenor
James Platt, Bass
In the beginning, there was the Word – but for Joseph Haydn, there was music too: some of the freshest ever written. ‘When I think of God, I can write only cheerful music’, he said, and his oratorio The Creation is powered by a sense of joy that embraces both earthworms and angels. But Haydn’s vision of a universe emerging from chaos also inspired music of cosmic grandeur, and with a group as spirited as La Nuova Musica, a conductor as expert as David Bates, and a truly stellar line up of soloists, this is a concert to light up a November night.
Handel’s Aci, Galatea e Polifemo
Tuesday 29 October 2024, 7:30pm
Wigmore Hall, London
Book now: https://www.wigmore-hall.org.uk/whats-on/202410291930
Handel - Rinaldo HWV7 Overture
Handel - Aci, Galatea e Polifemo HWV72
Featuring:
Lucy Crowe, Soprano (as Aci)
Fleur Barron, Mezzo-soprano (as Galatea)
Luigi De Donato, Bass (as Poifemo)
David Bates and La Nuova Musica and an all star cast tackle Handel’s Italian cantata, first performed in Naples in 1708. Aci, Galatea and Polifemo has a similar plot to his better-known English serenata Acis and Galatea of 1718, but an almost entirely different score full of wonderful music. Aci lacks an overture, so that to Handel’s first London opera Rinaldo (1711) is co-opted for this occasion.

St Martin-in-the-Fields, London
As we heard at the coronation of King Charles III, Handel’s Zadok the Priest is one of the most spinetingling moments in all music. His other three coronation anthems are an infectious mix of grandeur, celebratory joy and tenderness. Dixit Dominus is another flamboyant choral classic, written to impress Italian audiences when the young composer was flexing his compositional muscles his in Rome. Experience some of Handel’s greatest music in the superlative hands of La Nuova Musica, directed by the vivacious David Bates, one of the most stylish and engaging baroque ensembles (‘open delight and impassioned beauty’, The Times).

Monteverdi Selva Morale e Spirituale
Tuesday October 18 at 7:30pm
Wigmore Hall
Following our performance of Monteverdi’s Vespers (Oct 2021) and Madrigals (June 2022), we return to Wigmore for Monteverdi’s final and majestic publication; Selva Morale e Spirituale, set alongside quasi-religious works from L’Orfeo, L’Incoronazione di Poppea, and his eighth book of Madrigals. Even in Monteverdi’s religious music the human is never far – perfectly articulated in Il Combattimento, and the Prologue from L’Orfeo. Psalm settings for the Vespers bookend our recital, with florid displays of intense religious fervour in motets such as Ego Flos Campi, Audi Coelum, Salve Regina and the impossibly operatic telling of the Pianto della Madonna, showing Monteverdi’s genius in the most human and profound manner possible.
Due to illness, Louise Kemény (soprano), Ben Johnson (tenor) and Chris Webb (bass) are unable to perform in the above concert. We are grateful to Ana Beard Fernández (soprano), Simon Wall (tenor) and Edward Grint (bass) who have agreed to step in as a replacement.

Monteverdi wrote his madrigals throughout a long and illustrious life - ranging from the brevity and harmonic delicacy of the first book for five solo voices and no continuo, all the way through to the magnificence of Book 8 - complete with obbligato violins and a plethora of continuo instruments. The uniting themes of love, loss and desire are vividly brought to life through Monteverdi's pen and often exquisite texts. Despite them being written over 400 years ago, they speak with immediacy and eternal truth to 21st-century ears.

Beauty and innocence are corrupted by lust in Handel’s provocative drama about the dangers of love. The story is simple. Girl loves boy, a rival appears who wants the girl, she refuses and in a fit of passionate rage, he kills the boy.
Surrounded by the gothic beauty of the Stone Nest building, La Nuova Musica skillfully reimagines the iconic fairytale to reveal a dark truth that is familiar to us all. Through the drama of the music, we are compelled to see the best and worst of ourselves in the characters and we are confronted with the cruelty of evolution. Will the desires of the strong will forever dominate the ideals of the weak?
