Il Circolo di Giulio Caccini
Somm recordings

Giulio Caccini's Le Nuove Musiche is a collection of works for solo voice and basso continuo. Caccini uses two distinct compositional styles in the collection: twelve 'madrigals' — through-composed, somewhat rhythmically-free compositions with rhapsodic passages designed to emphasise the important words in the text — and ten 'arias' which are shorter and usually strophic.

The Sacred Flame
Collegium records

'...The Sacred Flame is a fascinating, impressive compendium of liturgical choral music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, drawn from across both Italy and Northern Europe.

'...John Rutter's pristine arrangients are realised to sublime effect by The Cambridge Singers. The occasional early-music settings of La Nuova Musica offer intriguing insights into the authentic period sound of stile nuovo pieces such as Monteverdi's 'Beatus vir' and Buxtehude's 'Magnificat'...'

Andy Gill - The Independent

'Bach's 'O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht' is a fitting closing that gives full exposure to the skill of the instrumentalists notably some really beautiful oboe playing from Joel Raymond and Sarah Humphreys. This is a fine anthology that many listeners will treasure. John Rutter clearly knows and understands this repertoire well and, as a result, the sound and passion of this album stays with you for a long while after listening. I hope that his inspired combination of La Nuova Musica and the Cambridge singers will go on to future projects together.'
