Artsdesk review of Wigmore Hall Monteverdi Vespers

*****

“Small venue, huge impact”

“Directing from the harpsichord, and leaping up from time to time in bursts of well-focused energy, David Bates never missed a rhythmic trick in this most innately dramatic of all choral masterpieces.”

“Bates’s attention to detail in tempi and dynamics packed every section with little – and not so little – coups de théâtre.”

Thank you to The Artsdesk for the recent five-star review of our Monteverdi Vespers at Wigmore Hall. It is so wonderful when a reviewer completely ‘gets’ what we are aiming for. It was an immense privilege and so much fun to perform this stunning work in this beautiful venue with our fabulous team. Monteverdi wrote the piece whilst at the court in Mantua… and he wrote that it was for use in “princely rooms and small chapels”. The Wigmore Hall is about the same size room as the court in Mantua. We loved taking this work back to what we think Monteverdi intended, to what he wrote on the page and to the exciting and energising nature of a small consort - one singer per part - in a small, rousing space.
